Blue KC Presents 2019 Winners of Healthcare Innovation Prize

In 2019, we were excited to see another round of competitors for the Blue KC Healthcare Innovation Prize presented in partnership with the Regnier Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and the Henry W. Bloch School of Management at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC).

In its second year, the competition continued to promote creativity and innovation in the Kansas City community and provide real-world opportunities to healthcare students.

Two teams of Kansas and Missouri college students won cash prizes to help them get their inventions off the ground. We applaud the students’ ingenuity and their team names deserve a shout out, too.

Coming in First: DeepLens.

The DeepLens team won $20,000 for first place. This team invented a headset with a built-in camera, microphone and speaker to help individuals with vision impairment and loss perform daily activities. This amazing device has the capability to read aloud from a restaurant menu using the camera and speaker features.

Coming in second: Bionic Bowel.

The pill they developed will treat the causes and symptoms of Crohn’s disease by normalizing a person’s pH levels in their intestinal tract and neutralizing acids found there.
