KANSAS CITY, MO. (August 2, 2019) After reports came out that monetary donations to Meals on Wheels of Wyandotte County took a nearly 50% dive over the last five years, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City (Blue KC) reached out to offer its support and committed a $10,000 donation to the local group. The Kansas City chapter of the national organization Meals on Wheels serves nutritious meals to almost 900 senior citizens of Wyandotte County, who may be, for emotional or physical reasons, unable to provide for their own nutritional needs.
Blue KC has been committed to creating a meaningful impact for the Kansas City community for over 80 years and has launched initiatives with the goal of improving the health and wellness of Kansas City residents. Macaela Stephenson, Manager of Community Relations, oversees Blue KC’s signature program, Well Stocked, which aims to provide the Kansas City community access to nutritious food.
"When the team at Blue KC heard this program, which provides nutritious meals to so many in Wyandotte County, would be impacted due to a lack of funding, we knew had to offer our support. Meals on Wheels provides healthy meals to people in our community, who otherwise may not have access to nutritious food or any meals at all. We are grateful to be able to contribute to an organization whose values and mission aligns so similarly to ours."
Access to nutritious food is key to a healthy community. Today more than 350,000 people in Kansas City don't know where their next meal will come from. Through Well Stocked, Blue KC has fostered significant partnerships to increase awareness of hunger issues facing our Kansas City community.
